Special Project: Fuel Farm Secondary Containment Liner

NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

Job Description:

Line an existing fuel storage bund at Emerald in North Queensland with a flexible fuel resistant membrane

Details:

The fuel bund contained a number of tanks storing, leaded, unleaded fuel, diesel and gas. The client had concerns that in the event of a catastrophic failure of any of the fuel tanks, they would generate a huge environmental problem

The total area of the bund was 2200 m/2 and this held 370,000 liters in total fuels

The material we selected for the project was a fuel resistant Elvaloy

The project was made extremely complex due to the number of penetrations, 150 in total, and each needed to be sealed by way of boots. The penetrations ranged in size from as small as 8mm up to 500mm in diameter as well as stairways and concrete pads. In places the sealing work was done under tanks, only 400mm off the ground.

The client could not close the fuel farm down for the course of the installation, so the works were undertaken during the normal course of the day-to-day operations. Fuel was constantly transferred to road and rail units from the tanks and as a consequence, Sniffer units were constantly used to detect any fuel/ gas vapors during the site welding process.
