Problem with a Leaking Dam?

Dams are the life blood of farms and many rural and remote areas. When a dam leaks, its a loss of a valuable and costly resource. Some dams can be repaired with a seal made from a clay or polymer based material. However where there exists poor soil conditions this is really at best only a temporary solution. For true prevention of water loss a more permanent solution is needed, such as a DURADAM dam liner.

When Would You Need a Dam Liner to Seal a Dam?

When deciding how you should spend your money in repairing your dam, there are several aspects you should take into consideration. This includes how long you intend to use the dam for and the type of dam that you have.

Dams will really only lose water through one of two mechanisms:

  • Water evaporation
  • Seepage and leaks into the ground

Why these occur though can be varied. Water loss through evaporation is best mitigated at the design stage. Generally though, dams that are well shaded and deeper, evaporate less water.

Dams that are losing water through seepage may require one or more of several different solutions. Generally seepage occurs through:

  • Poor soil conditions, clay based soils being the best blocking seepage.
  • Ground movement forming cracks
  • Erosion of the dam wall or floor
  • Incursion from tree roots
  • Damage from livestock

Fixes for water seepage can be just as varied, typical methods include:

  • Adding a sealant to the dam, which gets trapped in the cracks forming a seal
  • Cleaning out the dam and re-compacting the soil
  • Rebuilding the dam in a new site
  • Using a dam lining or some other permanent barrier

Soil conditions will play a big part in which remedy will work the best. As an example, for sandy, loamed based soils or shale rock soils, these will typically leak regardless of the type of sealant used. So while they are a cheaper initial solution, looking forward they can potentially become quite expensive. Other options are then re-location of the dam where the soil has more clay content or use of a permanent barrier such as a dam liner.

Benefits & Features of a DURADAM Dam Liner

DURADAM Dam liners, while seemingly more expensive than some other methods for stopping leaky dams, do offer many advantages and benefits.

  • DURADAM dam liners one of the best permanent solutions to stop leaks and prevent future leakage.
  • Are a worthwhile long term investment - DURADAM Dam liners are made to last, so unlike sealants that have to be re-visited in 6 months or 12 months, a dam liner will last decades. DURADAM PE based liners come with a minimum 10 year warranty and can last up to 20 yrs or more.
  • Ideal DIY dam solution, a dam liner is straight forward to install - in fact you can install a liner yourself. See our installation tips for more information.
  • Unlike some cheaper liners, DURADAM doesn't need to be covered to receive the warranted service life.
  • The DURADAM and DURAPOND liner range encompasses a versatile range of liners, so we have a dam or pond liner to suit all liquid storage applications.
  • DURADAM is safe for fish and marine life.
  • UV stable and rot resistant
  • Unlike many cheaper Asian imported liner materials, all of our DURADAM products are manufactured in North America and fabricated in Australia to suit Australian conditions.

Protecting the DURADAM Dam Liner

Where there is a rough surface, sharp objects or protrusions, we recommend that you also use our GEOSHIELD geotextile fabric underlay. Our GEOSHIELD geotextile underlay can help protect the liner from punctures and tears that can occur, where roots, rocks and poor or rough soil conditions exist.

Where farm animals or even wild animals make use of the dam, you will take measures to ensure the animals do not damage the liner. There are two basic ways to do this. The most preferable way is to erect a fence around the dam and pump water to a trough. Otherwise the liner should be covered by geotextile and at least 300 mm of gravel wherever an animal can walk in the dam.

  • a dam liner can be designed to store liquids other than water
  • long lasting, we have liners that are warranted to give 10 years plus service life
  • dam liners not only stop water leakage, but stop contaminants from entering or leaving the dam.
  • dam liners are fish and marine life safe, helping protect investments in aquamarine industries
  • dam liners can also be made to store effluent and other hazardous farm waste for use in effluent ponds, bioretention ponds, treatment ponds, and other waste collection areas.

How Much Liner Do I Need?

To help you work out how much dam liner material you will need, we have an online calculator for dam and ponds. Input your dam or pond size and it will calculate how much liner material you will need to order.

Can I Install My Dam Liner?

If you are a little handy with tools it is not too difficult to install your own dam liner. For installation and other tips, make sure to read our dam & pond liner installation tips.

Protecting Your Dam Liner

Where there is a rough surface, sharp objects or protrusions, we recommend that you also use our GEOSHIELD geotextile fabric underlay.

The geotextile fabric underlay is a professional way to help protect pond and dam liners from punctures and tears that can occur from rough soil, roots or other debris.
