# How to use the Pond/Dam Liner Calculator

Installing a pond or dam liner isn't too difficult, but you do need to make sure you order enough liner material!

For your benefit we have made this simple pond liner calculator to work out how much pond liner you will need to order for a given width, length and depth. The calculator also take into how much material you want around the edge to anchor the liner in place. The diagram below will show you where to take your measurements from.

## Before You Install

Make sure to check with your local council for any pond regulations that may be in place, including the maximum depth that is allowed. For example, most councils will specify the minimum depth that is required for fencing to be erected.

Since regulations do vary from council to council, it is always advisable to check current regulations when you are at the designing stage.

## How We Calculate These Values

To calculate the total size of pond liner required is quite straight forward. It is just the maximum size of the pond with the depth and edges taken into account. The pond liner should never be stretched, so it is always safer to allow a little extra. Here is a simple example to explain.

### The Liner Length needed is equal to

max. pond length

**plus** 2 x the maximum depth

**plus** 2 x the amount of edging needed^{++}

(we recommend a minimum edging of 300 mm per side)

An example is a 3m long x 2 m wide and 0.5m deep pond. Using the above equation, the amount of material required is:

the length **3 + (2 x 0.5m depth) + (2 x 0.3m edging) = 4.6m**.

So 4.6m is required in the length of the pond liner.

### The Liner Width needed is equal to

max. pond width

**plus** 2 x the maximum depth

**plus** 2 x the amount of edging needed^{++}

(recommend a minimum edging of 300 mm per side)

Using the same example as above (3m long x 2m wide and 0.5m deep), the amount of material required is:

the width **2 + (2 x 0.5m depth) + (2 x 0.3m edging) = 3.6m**.

So 3.6m is required in the width of the pond liner.

This being the case, a flat sheet required to suit a 3m long x 2 m wide at 0.5m deep will need to measure a minimum of **4.6m long x 3.6m wide**.
